Coast FIRE

Retirement
The numbers shown come from a sample profile for illustration – in the calculator you see your own values.

Coast FIRE is an intermediate goal: you have saved enough that your wealth will grow to your FIRE number by your FIRE age without further contributions. You can stop "saving for retirement" – and still arrive comfortably.

From Coast FIRE onwards you only need to earn your running costs (no more investing needed). That opens up options: work less, do more interesting work, have more free time.

Coast FIRE is already reached – you could stop investing right now.

Example:Goal: €600,000 at 65. Today: 35 years old, so 30 years until FIRE. At a 5% real return: Coast FIRE number = 600,000 ÷ (1.05)³⁰ = €138,756. With €138,756 today, the portfolio grows to €600,000 by 65 – without any further contributions.

How it is calculated

Coast FIRE = FIRE number ÷ (1 + real return)^years until FIRE age

Good to know

Real return:Coast FIRE uses the real return (nominal minus inflation) so that the projection stays in today's purchasing power.
