Pension points (Entgeltpunkte)

Retirement

Pension points – officially Entgeltpunkte – are the currency of the German statutory pension. You collect points for every contribution year: anyone earning exactly the average salary (2026: €51,944 gross) gets 1 point. A higher salary earns more points, up to about 2 points per year at the contribution ceiling.

Each point is currently worth €42.52 of monthly pension (the current pension value, uniform across Germany). The pension value rises every year on July 1 in line with wages.

In FireLotse you enter the points you expect to have collected by the time you reach FIRE. After that you usually stop contributing – but your points are kept and paid out from the start of your pension.

Where do I find my points?Your pension statement from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (Renteninformation, sent annually from age 27) shows your pension entitlement earned so far in euros. Divide it by the pension value that applied on the date of the letter to get your points. Your online pension account lists the points per year in your insurance record.
Estimating points at FIRE:Points today + about 1 point per further working year at an average salary. Example: 18 points today, 12 more years until FIRE at roughly average pay → about 30 points.
