Events — the unexpected along the way
FIRE · BasicsEvents are everything that can influence your journey to your FIRE goal — planned or unplanned. They sit in the middle of the triangle because they can affect all three axes at the same time.
Some you know in advance (inheritance, salary jump, parental leave, a family member needing care). Others are systematic risks (market crash, tax changes, an inflation spike). Both belong in a good FIRE roadmap.
Planned inflowsInheritance, severance pay, life-insurance payout — shorten your distance or allow a lower pace.
Planned outflowsBuying a home, a major renovation, care costs, a trip around the world — lengthen the distance or slow your pace for a while.
Plan changes4-day week, sabbatical, career jump — change your savings rate from a certain point in time.
Systematic risksA market crash shortly before FIRE (sequence-of-returns risk), tax changes, inflation. They cannot be eliminated, but they can be cushioned.
