The active/passive ratio shows what percentage of your external income comes from passive sources (rental income, portfolio income, transfers). Wealth withdrawals deliberately do not count here – they are a balance-sheet shift out of your own wealth, not passive income. At 100%, all of your income comes from passive sources – a necessary but not sufficient condition for financial freedom: only when passive income also fully covers your expenses are you truly independent (FU ratio).
Example:You earn €3,000 from work and €500 passively → 14.3% passive income. At FIRE the ratio is 100%.
How it is calculated
Passive share = (passive income ÷ total income) × 100
